Lest any one of us go through life never being afforded the opportunity to try out for a TV talent competition, ABC is reportedly pondering a reboot of ‘Star Search’ – to be fronted by no less than Paula Abdul.
The ‘American Idol’ alumna is finalizing a deal to host and/or judge the like-new series, says EW.com, with an eye on a summer 2010 premiere. When contacted by Fancast, ABC declined to comment on the report.
Since bidding ‘Idol’ adieu after last season (by some accounts, due to a squabble over what the rest of us would consider to be awesome money), Abdul has been rumored to be joining ‘Dancing with the Stars’ (didn’t happen) and reuniting with former foil Simon Cowell on his U.S. adaptation of ‘The X Factor,’ set to premiere on Fox in fall 2010.
The original ‘Star Search’ ran from 1983 to 1995 and was hosted by Ed McMahon, who on a weekly basis would reach for the stars… and grab them. Categories included male and female vocalist, stand-up comedy, dancing, and – my favorite, if only because of the degree of difficulty involved throwing to commercial – spokesmodel.
Arsenio Hall hosted a short-lived relaunch that debuted in 2003.
What do you think, Fancast fans? Has Paula straight up found the ideal vehicle for her TV comeback? Or is any new ‘Star Search’ doomed to get sucked into a black hole?
