UPDATE: Christiane Amanpour has been offered the job to host ABC’s Sunday talker ‘This Week,’ according to Fishbowl DC. The CNN star says she is considering accepting.

Men once ruled the news show roost. With Katie Couric at CBS and Diane Sawyer at ABC, however, women are rapidly gaining ground in the genre. And that domination may soon extend into the weekend, thanks to news that CNN’s Christiane Amanpour is “in talks” to replace George Stephanopoulos at ABC’s Sunday show, ‘This Week.’

Much of Amanpour’s career has revolved around her astute, brave and unapologetic reporting on international news. She most recently took over a daily spot at CNN, appropriately entitled “Amanpour.” According to sources like Politico, however, the 52 year old’s work schedule may now extend into the weekend at ABC’s ‘This Week,’ which would be a topical departure for the foreign policy-expert Amanpour.

The network has been searching for someone to replace Stephanopolous, who’s now anchoring over at ‘Good Morning America,’ Sawyer’s old gig. Though ABC has allowed a rotating cast of guest hosts, such as Barbara Walters and Jack Tapper, they’re definitely on the prowl for a permanent headliner.

ABC’s not saying who they’re considering – and Amanpour’s representative at CNN, where she’s worked since 1983, refuses to comment – but ABC News President David Westin has spilled the beans on what they’re looking for in a host, “On Sunday morning, we’re looking for someone who is very intelligent and a strong interviewer and can engage in a discussion.” Westin and his team are also looking beyond ABC’s pool for a potential contender. Jeffrey Schneider, ABC News’ Senior Vice President says they have “talked to lots of people inside and outside.”

If the rumors are true, and Amanpour’s talking with ABC about This Week, it’s unclear whether her CNN show would be put on the back burner. Also, this would be the second high-profile CNN personality who could leave for one of the “big three” networks: rumor has it that Anderson Cooper’s in line to take over Couric’s position at CBS Nightly News.
