Eureka‘ stars Colin Ferguson and Salli Richardson-Whitfield could barely contain themselves when teasing the Syfy series’ fourth season, premiering July 16.

“Something happens at the beginning of the season where everything shifts,” Ferguson told Fancast at Syfy’s upfront party Tuesday night. “It’s one of those things where you assume at the end of the episode, ‘Oh, it’s going to reverse itself’ – and it doesn’t.”

Asked whether the show is uncorking a “good” or a “bad” twist, Ferguson grew tight-lipped, saying, “It just goes different. It goes lateral. Everything changes. Not necessarily for the better or for the worse, but everything changes.”

“It’s ballsy, I’ll give them that,” he added.

There’s also this clue: New cast member James Callis (aka ‘Battlestar Galactica’s Gaius Baltar) apparently is behind the game-changer. “That’s his baggage,” Ferguson said of Callis’ Dr. Grant, a long-MIA Eureka native who returns to town most unexpectedly.

“He comes in with his own secrets,” said Richardson-Whitfield. “Is he a good guy, a bad guy? You don’t know.”

What we do know is that Grant is due to woo Allison. “He can try,” Ferguson challenged. Turning semi-serious, he touted the addition of Callis as “great,” noting, “It’s someone else for Salli to work off of. “

“She’s bored of me,” he said with a wink to his castmate.

To keep things even more interesting for Jack and Alison, Ferguson and Richardson-Whitfield confirmed that Jamie Ray Newman will be back “for a couple episodes” as Dr. Tess Fontana (an encore made easier by the cancellation of ABC’s ‘Eastwick’). Also, viewers have not seen the last of Jack’s daughter Zoe, despite her apparent plans to head off to college at the close of Season 3.
