’60 Minutes’: Did Steve Kroft Upstage Junior Gotti?

Despite John Gotti Jr.’s humanizing revelations on last night’s ‘60 Minutes‘ – his teenage daughter often tells him to “mind your own business” – the most entertaining moments in the lengthy profile piece had nothing to do with the son of the former Gambino family crime boss, and everything to do with the presenter, Steve Kroft.

Kroft, who has largely proven himself the go-to guy for the news magazine’s significant interviews of late (like this Obama gem from last year), managed to throw every single mafia cliche not presently sleeping with the fishes at Junior Gotti during the 30-minute conversation.

As a result, the piece played like some strangely admirable version of Everything You Always Wanted to Know About The Mob (But Were Afraid to Ask), including Kroft’s amusingly stone-faced use of the term whacked, as in: Junior, “did you ever worry about getting whacked?”

Proving that pop culture provides all roots to the Cosa Nostra tree of knowledge, Kroft wondered of the 46-year-old’s decision to quit the family business: “Did you think you could get out? That people would let you out?” “Sure. Why not?” Junior countered, incredulously. “Who says?” Pausing momentarily for everyone at home reflect on the rather obvious answer, Kroft blushed, admitting, “Well, all the movies.”

Seemingly oblivious to the fact that the made man’s attorney was cemented in a neighboring chair throughout the majority of the interview, Kroft managed to sneak in a substantial amount of zingers – if not evoking entirely earth-shattering responses.
