Bested recently only by Starz’ ‘Spartacus’ (which got picked up for a second season before the series even debuted), HBO is renewing the new David Simon-helmed drama ‘Treme‘ after just one episode, reports James Hibberd at THR Feed.

HBO president Michael Lombardo told THR of the decision:

“We would have picked up this show last week. We’ve seen the first nine episodes it’s as strong as any show we’ve seen. Much like ‘The Wire,’ the audience is so passionate and so invested. We’re about servicing our subscriber base and I believe that people will become addicted to this show. We have to be a place where this kind of excellence is giving space to continue.”

This is heartening news for the series, which premiered to 1.4 million viewers Sunday night. It’s also exciting to know you can really dig your heels in without the fear of it being wiped clean from next season’s slate (a trend we wish more networks would follow).
