David Hasselhoff, ‘The Young & The Restless’s original heartthrob, will reprise his role as Snapper Foster for several episodes in June. Hasselhoff, best known for his roles on ‘Knight Rider’ and ‘Baywatch,’ starred on Y&R from 1975 to 1982. His character Snapper got his unusual nickname because of his bad temper. The handsome doctor left town when Hasselhoff was cast in ‘Knight Rider.’
Hasselhoff will not be returning alone. The entire Foster family will be visiting Genoa City. Wings Hauser will be back as Snapper’s brother Greg and one of Y&R’s original cast members, Julianna McCarthy will play Foster matriarch Liz. The Fosters were one of Y&R’s core families when the series began. During the 1980s, the show became centered around the Abbotts and the Newmans, with Jill (Jess Walton), the only remaining Foster.
Though they are the best known actors to play the roles, both Hauser and Hasselhoff were recasts. The last time the Foster family reunited, in 2003, Snapper and Greg were played by the actors who originated the roles, William Grey Epsy and Jim Houghton. Back then, the family gathered because Liz was undergoing surgery. She ended up revealing to Jill that she was adopted, kicking off a storyline that led to the revelation that Jill was the biological daughter of her longtime nemesis, Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper.) With Jill recently learning that the DNA tests were wrong and she and Katherine is are not actually mother and daughter, it’s possible that the Fosters could be gathering to help her deal with some new information about her biological family.
In recent years, Hasselhoff’s acting career has been overshadowed by his personal problems. He has struggled with alcoholism and endured the humiliation of having a video of him eating a hamburger while he was drunk become an internet sensation. He remained in the public eye as a judge on the first four seasons of ‘America’s Got Talent.’ He is currently shooting a reality series about his life for A&E. His brief return to Y&R will likely be documented on the reality series, as well as generating plenty of publicity for Y&R.
