Sam Mendes to Direct Robert Downey Jr. in ‘Wizard of Oz’ Prequel?

With the James Bond franchise being put on hold thanks to MGM’s money woes, director Sam Mendes is freed up for other projects. Surprisingly enough, one of those projects could actually be a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. According to the magic of Twitter, we’ve learned the film would be entitled Oz The Great and Powerful, and could even potentially star Robert Downey Jr. as the titular titan.

That’s all the info there really is right now, but the chatter is that it would tell the story of the wizard and how he came to be the man behind the curtain. It doesn’t appear that the project will have anything to do with the super popular musical Wicked, either. So while you chew over the notion of RDJ as the guy the yellow brick road leads to, watch him donning the yellow and red armor of Iron Man in this clip from the upcoming blockbuster sequel.
