Conan O’Brien’s first television appearance since being relieved of his ‘Tonight Show’ command drew quite a crowd, leading ’60 Minutes’ to win the night with an audience of 13.3 million total viewers.

In fact, the second half-hour – during which ’60 Minutes’ aired the Conan Q&A – delivered in excess of 14 million viewers.

In the sit-down with correspondent Steve Kroft, O’Brien shared that he got “very depressed” after his split from NBC, which had awarded ‘The Tonight Show’ back to Jay Leno. “It was like a marriage breaking up suddenly, violently, quickly. And I was just trying to figure out what happened.”

O’Brien also questioned NBC’s claim that ‘The Tonight Show’ had started losing money under his stewardship, and let loose with a prolonged, hearty chuckle when asked about the perception that Leno somehow got “screwed” in all of this.

The Hollywood Reporter, for one, posits that O’Brien’s decision to appear on the CBS newsmagazine was a misguided one, noting that the funnyman as of late is coming across as tragic rather than comic. How do you think Conan fared?
