This Wednesday at 9/8c, ABC’s ‘Modern Family‘ kicks off its two-part trek to Hawaii, when Gloria (played by Sofia Vergara) surprises Jay by inviting the extended Pritchett/Dunphy clan to join in on their island getaway.

Yeah, Jay (Ed O’Neill) is thinking the same thing once his brood sneaks up on him at the airport: How does one happy couple plus two other couples plus a total of five kids add up to a romantic vacation?

Funny thing is, Jay’s son-in-law Phil (Ty Burrell) is thinking the same thing, that rugrats be damned, he and Claire will enjoy some sexytime in Hawaii.

Previewing the two-part episode – which was shot on location in the Aloha State – Julie Bowen says, “Basically, it’s about how kids ruin romance. Phil is determined to turn this vacation into the honeymoon we never had – and the challenge is to do that while Claire is forever trying to micromanage their children’s lives.”

Of course, a supersized family transplanting their misadventures to Hawaii stirs up memories of ‘The Brady Bunch.’ And while there are some zany happenings at the airport – a family member’s run-in with the federal No Fly List included! – Bowen dismisses our suggestion that an evil tiki will come into play or that Cameron will throw his back out during a hula lesson.

“Yes, Luke finds a tiki. And then somebody goes waterskiing and jumps a shark. No, we don’t have any of those things happen,” says the actress with a laugh. “It’s a normal episode set in a beautiful place. We tried to avoid, successfully, the clichés of The Show That Goes To Hawaii.”
