If Fox’s ‘Lie to Me‘ is picked up for a third season, it will be with a new showrunner at the helm.

Shawn Ryan (‘The Shield’), who seized the reins for Season 2, is stepping away to focus on other projects – namely, the upcoming FX private eye drama ‘Terriers’ and the Chicago-based cop show ‘Ride-Along,’ which is hoping to score a spot on Fox’s 2010-11 schedule.

“When I took [the ‘Lie to Me’] gig, I had things in development, nothing in production,” Ryan explained on Twitter. “Now with ‘Terriers’ and possibly ‘Ride-Along,’ [it’s] too much work.

“I had a great year working on [‘Lie to Me’] and helped develop a team that’s ready for more responsibility,” he added. “Time for me to go.”

Ryan contends that the timing of his decision, as ‘Lie to Me’ straddles the bubble hoping for renewal, will afford the studio time to form a “succession plan to increase odds of pick-up.”

Fox will announce its fall schedule at its May 17 upfront presentation. Both ‘Lie to Me’ and ‘Human Target’ await word on their fates.

Scoop: Burgi Lands In ‘Lie To Me’s Crosshairs

Following a protracted hiatus, ‘Lie to Me’ resumes its second season June 7, with guest stars such as ‘Alias’ alumna Melissa George (playing a new stakeholder in the Lightman Group), ‘Desperate Housewives’ vet Richard Burgi (as a governor targeted for assassination) and ‘WKRP’s Howard Hessman.

Says Ryan, “[I’m] still very excited to show you 12 episodes we have in the can.”
