General Hospital’s Carolyn Hennesy (Diane) is on a roll. Not only does she star as Port Charles resident mob lawyer Diane, but she has a recurring role as Barb on Cougar Town, writes the Pandora series of young adult novels and was recently hired by ABC to write a book from the POV of GH’s Spinelli.  This morning she added to her success when she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for Best Supporting Actress. I spoke to Hennessy shortly after she learned the good news.

Congratulations.  How did you find out you were nominated?

Mitch Messinger [publicist] from ABC Daytime, he called me this morning at 5:50 and I wasn’t awake.  So he said congratulations.  And I just thought, ‘What?” I really didn’t know.  It was very surreal.

Which episode did you submit?

What I fondly refer to as the Thanksgiving episode which has a conversation with Diane and Molly (Haley Pullos) about Alexis’s love life and then goes right into some very funny scenes with Max(Derk Cheetwood)  and Diane rolling around on the floor in Sonny’s office with a plunger and some rubber gloves.  That episode ticked me so much that I thought,”Why not?” You’ve got to go with your gut and in terms of the nominations it seems to have worked.

It’s risky to submit comedy, even though it’s such a difficult type of acting.  The nominations tend to go to people with big crying scenes.

Thank you for recognizing that comedy can be extremely difficult.  They say that dying is easy but comedy is hard.  In a way I didn’t really have much of a choice because Diane has become a large part of the comic relief on the show. They don’t write the sturm und drang. The writers are brilliant for writing the funny for Diane.  I had to go with my strengths.

You are competing with a bunch of very talented women in your category.

I was just saying to someone else this is the showdown at the OK corral and I’m on the Clanton side.  I am so honored to be in this esteemed group because I have seen their work.  As long as I go to Vegas and have a good time.  I may write a little acceptance speech but I don’t know that I will be saying it because this is an amazing group.

General Hospital got the most nominations of any soap this year.

Isn’t that amazing? And richly deserved.  Drew Garrett (ex-Michael), bless his heart!  And of course, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) who I think is just an acting genius, Jonathan Jackson (Lucky) who is also stunning. Julie Marie Berman, she’s so talented.  And it’s fantastic for Sarah Brown (ex-Claudia.) Love her!  I do wish that Laura Wright (Carly) had been included because I’ve been up close and personal watching this woman work and I think there’s probably no finer actress.  What this woman can do is astonishing.  There’s always next year.

The all important question: what are you going to wear?

I think it’s really who I’m going to wear.  And I don’t know yet.  I’m going to take that time with that selection.  I know that June 27th is right around the corner. I’ve got to start looking.
