When Simon Cowell steps down tonight after nine seasons of ‘American Idol’, there will be two things to note: His exit is on his terms, and he’s keeping it classy.

“It was a classy final verdict [Tuesday] he gave when everyone expected him to end on a really mean note,” Cowell’s friend and co-judge on ‘Britain’s Got Talent,’ Piers Morgan, said Wednesday morning on a conference call with reporters. “He just said, ‘You are outstanding,’ to Crystal [Bowersox]. I think he was a very cool way to go.”

Cowell produces NBC’s ‘America’s Got Talent,’ which features Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and newcomer Howie Mandel as judges. Its fifth season premieres June 1.

Cowell returns next with the American ‘X Factor.’

“He’s going to be very excited about the ‘X Factor,’ said Morgan. “I also think he’s going to be sad to say goodbye to what’s been an incredible part of his life. It’s an amazing thing, isn’t it? Simon has been a part of American popular culture for nine seasons of ‘Idol.'”
