Hayes was among the actors singled out by Newsweek writer Ramin Setoodeh in a piece that questioned whether out gay performers can effectively play straight on stage. The article, posted online April 26, was soon after derided by Chenoweth – Hayes’ costar in ‘Promises, Promises’ – as being “horrendously homophobic.”
Numerous other entertainment biz biggies stepped forth to defend the gay acting community and/or deride Setoodeh and Newsweek. Hayes himself, however, was steadfastly mum last week during a conference call to promote his hosting of the Tonys, despire several attempts by reporters to solicit a soundbite on the subject.
The furthest Hayes went to speak to the subject was hint, “You have to tune in” to the Tonys to see if he addresses the brouhaha.
All Hayes did, though, was exchange some banter with Chenoweth early on in the telecast, which then led to a shared look of longing. That cued an abrupt and over-the-top sloppy, tongue-tuggling kiss, must to the audience’s entertainment.
“I know what you’re thinking,” Hayes said after the clinch. “She’s too short for me.”
