“You look wonderful, my friend!”

David Letterman got the skinny from John Goodman on his dramatic weight loss when the actor dropped by ‘The Late Show with David Letterman‘ Wednesday night.

Goodman, who shocked everyone last week when he hit the red carpet looking healthy and half his size, admitted he was “pushing 400” lbs. when he was at his all-time heaviest.

What sparked his slim-down? His family for one thing, who Goodman joked would tease him, “You’re breaking furniture for Lord’s sake, come on, lighten up.”

“It’s night and day, getting a lot of exercise, feeling great” Goodman said to the impressed late-night host. “It’s going to be an ongoing process for the rest of my life.”

Like many people, the battle of the bulge has been a continual fight for the ‘Roseanne‘ star.

“I’d get off of ‘Roseanne’ every spring. I’d lose 60 lbs. every spring. Then I got too fond of the barley corn … I’d gain it back and then some, every year.”

What else helped him get in shape? Giving up alcohol. “I hit it pretty hard for 30 years and there was a lot of residual damage,” Goodman revealed.

Goodman, who turns 58 this weekend, currently costars on HBO’s New Orleans drama ‘Treme.’
