A big-screen adaptation of Broadway’s ‘Wicked’ is inching closer to reality, now that the hit musical’s creative team has started meeting with prospective directors – J.J. Abrams (‘Star Trek’) and Ryan Murphy (‘Glee’) included.

Deadline.com was first to dish on the ‘Wicked’ movie movement, and now speculation is flying faster than a winged monkey as to who will land the two leads. Armchair casting directors posting to Deadline have already established Lea Michele (‘Glee’) as one front-runner.

‘Wicked’ acts as a prequel to ‘The Wizard Of Oz,’ shedding light on the origins of Elphaba and Glinda, boarding school class mates who went from being BFF spellcasters to broomstick- and bubble-riding rivals.

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth originated the roles on Broadway, but are not expected to be candidates to play the barely 20something sorceresses.

Instead, Michele enjoys strong support to play Elphaba, which is fitting since A) she and Menzel are real-life pals from the planks, B) Menzel recently guested on ‘Glee’ as Rachel Berry’s birth mom, C) Lea knocked “Defying Gravity” – ‘Wicked’s showstopper – out of the park on ‘Glee,’ and D) the ladies look alike.

If not Michele, then Anne Hathaway (‘The Devil Wears Prada’) could make a bid for the baddie role.

At this early stage, there is far less consensus when it comes to who might play perky, popular Glinda. The talented Amanda Seyfried’s (‘Big Love‘) name has emerged as one possibility, provided we can all forget her participation in the otherwise unwatchable stage-to-screen remake of ‘Mamma Mia!’

Three more key roles that would need to be cast include Fiyero, Madame Morrible and The Wizard himself (Joel Grey had the role when I caught the Broadway staging).

Other director candidates taking meetings with the ‘Wicked’ creators include Rob Marshall (‘Chicago’) and James Mangold (‘Knight and Day’).
