Sela Ward has officially been added to the the cast of ‘CSI: NY,’ it was announced on Tuesday – some 24 hours after word got out that original cast member Melina Kanakaredes was leaving the CBS series.

Ward, who won Emmys for her work on ‘Sisters‘ and ‘Once & Again,’ will play an experienced investigator who transfers to the Big Apple from Washington, D.C.. Also of note, her character’s work is driven by her empathy for the victim.

“We are delighted to have Sela joining ‘CSI: NY,'” executive producer Pam Veasey said in a statement. “With the exciting stories planned for Season 7, she’ll be a dynamic addition to the cast and the team.”

Ward in turn said, “I am thrilled to be working with Gary [Sinise] and this terrific group of people. I’m a huge fan.”

Ward will make her ‘CSI: NY’ debut in the Season 7 premiere, effectively filling the void being left by Kanakaredes’ surprising departure.

When asked if Kanakaredes might also appear in the premiere – if only to help facilitate the abrupt transition – a CBS rep declined to comment for Fancast.

In addition to her aforementioned TV roles, Ward also enjoyed a (too-)short run on Fox’s ‘House,’ where she was a fleeting love interest for Dr. Crankypants. In fact, just this weekend I caught a rerun with her in it, and thought, “Gee, they should get her back….”

Yeah, not gonna happen now.
