And the winner for Outstanding Reality TV Host is… not going to be announced at the Primetime Emmy Awards airing Sunday, August 29, on NBC. Instead, that category has been relegated to the Creative Arts Ceremony held eight days earlier. To protest the move, reality TV’s major players might pull a no-show.

“It’s disappointing news,” nominated ‘Survivor‘ host Jeff Probst tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Collectively, this category represents several of the highest-rated and most popular shows on all of television.”

Will NBC’s Emmys Telecast Snub Conan’s ‘Tonight Show’?

The Academy opted to demote the Reality Host category in part to make room for the awarding of the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award to movie star George Clooney. This marks the first time in six years that award has been included in the on-air Emmys.

Jen Bresnan, senior VP of alternative programming for CBS, deems the move “the latest slap in the face” to reality TV.

“If you count up all the viewers that those five shows with nominated hosts represent” – ‘Survivor,’ ‘American Idol‘, ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ ‘The Amazing Race‘ and ‘Project Runway‘ – “that’s 200 million viewers,” Brennan tells the trade. “My guess is that those 200 million viewers probably disagree with the Academy’s decision.”

So affronted is the reality TV community that there is talk of members boycotting the August 21 Creative Arts ceremony or the August 29 telecast, says the Reporter.

One definite no-show on Saturday, August 21 is Probst. Though he had manipulated his ‘Survivor: Nicaragua‘ shoot schedule to attend the Primetime Emmys broadcast, “it’s too late for us to change our shooting schedule again,” he says.
