‘Glee‘ cocreator Ryan Murphy is setting the record straight on some rumors that have surfaced ever since word got out that the Fox series would be serving up an all-Britney Spears episode soon into the second season.
For one, Mr. Schuester – and thus Matthew Morrison – will not be shaving his head during the episode à la Spears’ famous 2007 meltdown.
“That [rumor] is false,” Murphy said on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show Tuesday morning.
Alluding to a low point in Spears’ life, Murphy says, is not in keeping with the “reverential” tone the special episode is aiming for. “Britney Spears is pop culture, and she’s been through a lot…. I wanted to do something that says, ‘Thank you for what you’ve done.'”
“We’re handling Britney with sort of kid gloves,” Murphy adds.
As for talk that Spears herself might make a cameo, although that possibility was dismissed just last month by one outlet, Murphy now says, “Britney, I think, 100 percent is going to be in the episode, which is exciting.”
Nothing is set in stone, but Murphy surmises that Britney will appear as a dental hygienist working for Emma’s new beau Carl (played by John Stamos). That would help tee up the Spears-tastic performances, which Murphy said all take place as “fantasies” envisioned by the glee clubbers as they go under anesthesia in the dentist’s chair.
If you recall, Spears’ last comedy cameo was on ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ where she played the receptionist working for Stella-the-dermatologist (Sarah Chalke).
What’s the good word, Gleeks? Would you be excited to see Britney in her tribute episode?
