Lindsay Lohan’s Mother Plays the Blame Game on ‘Today’

Were it not for an overly-harsh judge, Lindsay Lohan wouldn’t be in her latest mess, her (oblivious?) mother Dina repeatedly told Matt Lauer on ‘The Today Show‘ Friday morning.

Lauer must have felt like he was on MSNBC with Chris Matthews as Dina asserted four times in 15 minutes that the judge who sent Lindsay to jail and then rehab had played “hardball.”

“We may have a case against the state of California,” Dina said after mentioning several times that the judge had recused herself from Linsday’s case.

Lauer got the full denial/mama bear Lohan as Dina blithely insisted Lindsay was fine, “brilliant,” would be out of rehab early, and wasn’t as troubled as the tabloids made her out to be.

“She’s great, she’s been through a lot. The judge played hardball. Lindsay was in with alleged murderers – and she’s become friends with a lot of them. Lindsay’s rolled with the punches and she’s doing wonderfully.” (So now Lindsay is friends with murderers? Great!)

She cited her motherhood bona fides, mentioning three times that her son Michael just graduated college summa cum laude – because that has a lot to do with Lindsay going through her fourth round of rehab. (Dina even argued that number, forcing Matt to dig into his research to prove it really is four times. It is.)

Lauer tried repeatedly to ask Dina if she thought maybe the time away would do Lindsay some good. But Dina brushed him off, saying Lindsay has already grown up considerably.

“She was 19 years old, went to Los Angeles and was a young girl and got in trouble. I’m certainly not condoning drinking and driving and what she did, but she’s still paying a price from 2007 to now. It’s the same offense.”

And just in case Lauer wasn’t buying that it was the judge’s fault, Dina tried another tack: blaming the media.

“Lindsay doesn’t realize she does have people watching her, she does have a lot of media surrounding her. She can’t even go to Starbucks without 12 cars following us. It’s a little bizarre. Tabloids are daily and they follow these kids and it’s not fair,” Dina said, arguing that in the “old days,” people like Julia Roberts didn’t have to deal with such scrutiny.

Lauer wasn’t totally buying it. “I’m going to agree with you that a lot of it is purely stuff that’s written in tabloids, I get that. But other things in her life she has simply done. She has gotten into trouble with the law, you can’t blame it all on the tabloids, she’s has made some wrong choices.”

At which point Dina again blamed the judge.

In their second segment 90 minutes later, Lauer asked Dina if she ever seriously feared for her daughter’s health, or that she might die at a young age. Dina reminded him that she was the one who put Lindsay in rehab the first time in 2007 and now her problems are “blown out of proportion.”

Dina also said Lindsay would be relocating to New York when she got out and added that Lindsay approved of her mother going on ‘The Today Show.’

After her 15 minutes on national TV, Dina said Lindsay would be doing her own interview when she was released because: “I don’t speak for my children.”
