Continuing a tradition of booking halftime acts that have the potential to be rousing yet a little bit on the “safe” side, the upcoming Super Bowl will welcome the Black Eyed Peas to the 50-yard line, says one online report.

NFL reps declined to confirm the halftime show booking, which was first reported by the well-regarded sports blog

The last time a Super Bowl halftime act raised eyebrows – and inadvertently at that – was in 2004, when Justin Timberlake tugged at Janet Jackson’s top and “accidentally” exposed her breast. The FCC did not like that.

In the years since, the Big Game has gone with acts that appeal to an older generation – and are less likely to upset the apple cart: Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince (albeit wielding a phallic guitar), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen and, last year for Super Bowl XLIV, The Who.

Regardless of who hits the stage come February 6 in Texas, host Fox will be making serious bank. The network has already sold 90 percent of its ad inventory, at an average of $3 million per 30-second spot.
