Would you watch Larry King as a guest-host on ‘Saturday Night Live’?

This tantalizing possibility was apparently raised by Larry himself when he visited the ‘SNL’ studios this week to tape a special edition of ‘Larry King Live’ leading up to this weekend’s start of the venerable comedy show’s 36th season on NBC.

According to the New York Post, King, 76, couldn’t stop telling ‘SNL’ producers how “badly he wants to be on the show.”

CNN Delaying Larry King’s Retirement

On the ‘SNL’ set at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York, King sat down with cast members Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, Seth Meyers and Andy Samberg; executive producer Lorne Michaels; and Amy Poehler, this week’s guest host (Saturday at 11:30 p.m./10:30c). The interview will be seen Friday evening on ‘Larry King Live’ on CNN (9/8c). Musical guest Katy Perry – the subject of a dustup this week over the revealing dress she wore during a guest appearance on ‘Sesame Street’ – was not on hand for the King interview session.

Among other things, The Post reported, King asked Armisen to do some of his impressions, which include his impersonation of Larry King. In fact, King has been a target of the ‘SNL’ writers and performers for almost 20 years, starting in 1992 when he was portrayed by Kevin Nealon. After that, four others donned King’s trademark suspenders and over-sized glasses to portray the CNN talk-show legend: Will Ferrell, Norm MacDonald, Jimmy Fallon and Armisen.

King, of course, is retiring at the end of this year after 25 years as host of ‘Larry King Live.’ He’s being replaced by ‘America’s Got Talent’ judge Piers Morgan.

Well, why not Larry King as a guest-host on ‘SNL’? Betty White made a splash as an ‘SNL’ guest host last May at age 88, one of the most popular ‘SNLs’ of the entire season (and she won an Emmy for it too).

It could be the beginning of a fascinating new trend – ‘SNL’ turning to some of our oldest, most legendary TV personalities as guest hosts. It just so happens that somebody just started a campaign on Facebook to persuade ‘SNL’ to book comic-book legend Stan Lee (87-year-old co-creator of Spider-Man, among others) as a guest-host this season.

What do you think of this idea? Who would you pick from TV’s older set to host the show? Andy Rooney, anyone?
