“Do I see a split?”

“Just keep your eyes on the ball, Barney boy.”

Those were the opening lines of episode number one of ‘The Flintstones‘, which aired on ABC September 30, 1960. That’s right – TV’s first animated prime time show turns 50today, and if you take a few moments to watch that classic episode again (below), you’ll see that Fred and Barney are as fresh and funny as they were on their Friday night debut five decades ago. Google is celebrating the birthday with a Flintstones-themed logo. Though the series ran from 1960 to 1966, it has been on TV almost without interruption. “With the Stone Age setting and some very good writing, audiences loved it,’ John Stephenson, 87, who supplied the voice of Fred’s boss at the rock quarry, Mr. Slate, told the L.A. Times. “They still do.” Indeed, there are probably few TV fans under 70 that wouldn’t be able to provide the names of the “modern Stone Age family,” Fred and Wilma, as well as their neighbors, Barney and Betty Rubble. But how much do you really know about the show? Check out a few fun facts below and enjoy the original episode.
