Cue the song ‘Another One Bites The Dust.”
Just two weeks into the new TV season, ABC has shelved ‘My Generation,’ a coming-of-age drama about a documentary crew catching up with a group of friends 10 years after having documented them as high school seniors.
The show, which Miami Herald television critic Glenn Garvin called “well-acted and intelligently written,” managed only 3.9 million viewers in its second airing, a 31 percent drop from its first episode.
As evidenced by its dismal appeal to 18-49 year-olds (a 1.1 rating), ‘My Generation’ lacked the resonance of, say, the 1994 slacker classic ‘Reality Bites‘ or the new movie ‘The Social Network‘ (which concerns the founding of Facebook). Perhaps having to appeal to a broad audience hampered what could have been an entirely different show if it had an edgier point of view. Maybe it did in the beginning.
In any event, it follows Fox’s snazzy nighttime soap ‘Lone Star’ as this season’s second cancellation.
Which show will be next? Insiders are eyeing ABC’s legal drama ‘The Whole Truth’ and NBC’s ‘Outlaw.’ What do you think? Which of the season’s new shows have you loved? Which have you avoided? Which have you tried and thought, “Eh”?
