In a first for the ‘Top Chef’ franchise, two chefs removed themselves from the competition on Wednesday’s ‘Top Chef: Just Desserts.’ Turns out, they couldn’t stand the heat.
The pastry chef spin-off of the Emmy-winning Bravo show has shown the dessert-makers to be as delicate as chocolate soufflés.
New York chef Seth Caro broke down in tears over a grapefruit shortage one week and this week had a full-blown panic attack after being told he couldn’t make his own ice cream for the Quickfire challenge. Paramedics had to be called – that’s right, over ice cream.
Caro freaked out to producers – who were forced to appear on screen to calm him down – and had to be taken away in an ambulance.
After he finally settled down, Caro described the experience as “crushing.”
“This is the worst thing ever – to have a dream and to achieve it and not to have it taken away but to take it away from yourself. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody,” he said.
Later, in much less dramatic fashion, Malika Ameen of Chicago stunned the judges after her successful saffron panne cotta by asking to be booted. “I would, perhaps, like to ask to be eliminated today,” she said, interrupting a surprised guest judge Gale Gand.
Ameen had complained in previous weeks about missing her children and not enjoying cooking on the show.
In her blog on Bravotv.com, host Gail Simmons wrote that the judges loved Ameen’s dish. “It would have been pretty easy to send Heather C. home again, but Malika just didn’t want to be there. When someone is that adamant about it, you can’t keep them around.”
