My how his career has come full circle. John Benjamin Hickey once played a man who had to shower immediately after sex to purify himself on ‘Sex and the City‘ and now he’s reunited with his ‘SATC’ love interest, Cynthia Nixon, as a homeless man who never showers on Showtime’s ‘The Big C.’
“Cynthia Nixon is on next week,” Hickey told us at the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s (GLSEN) Respect Awards in Beverly Hills Friday night, honoring ‘Modern Family. “She plays Cathy’s [Laura Linney] college best chum and they reconnect. And, I connect with her and we start a bit of a fling and mayhem ensues. Yes, Sean gets another love interest.”
Not a bad hookup for a character who is homeless, lives off the grid, doesn’t bath, and eats out of dumpsters. But, as Hickey teases, we “will soon learn a little bit next week that maybe Sean isn’t as wild as everyone thinks he is.” Wait, does that mean he gets a j-o-b? “No, never that,” he says. Does he start to live on the grid at all? “Wait and see.”
Hickey also teased that while we won’t see Cathy’s husband Paul (Oliver Platt) move back into the house by season’s end, we will see “a lot of really great stuff happens with Cathy and Paul. The family starts to come together in a really great way and it becomes hard and harder for Cathy to hold this secret in.”

That secret, for those not watching but should, is that Cathy is dying of cancer. Thus, the title ‘The Big C.’
As for relating to his character’s eco-friendly quirks, Hickey admits, “There’s a lot of good stuff in the trash. I think there was a character on ‘Sex and the City’ who did this once too, but I’d thrown away a big piece of cake because it was too big to finish, and then I went in the trash and finished it. I don’t think that really counts as dumpster diving, but like my character I have been known to not shower. And, tonight, I didn’t shave.” (It was actually an episode of ‘Seinfeld’ and it was George Costanaza [Jason Alexander] who ate an éclair in the trash can.)
“The greenest thing I do in my life,” he continues, “is I walk every where and L.A. is not a walking down. I’ve even walked down Laurel Canyon before with all of my clothes to go to an audition. It’s awful. I’ve never gotten the job. They kick me out as soon as they see me.” Maybe he meant, “smells me.”
In case you’re nostalgic for some ‘SATC’ or want to look this one up, Hickey’s character was named Thomas John Andersen in the episode titled “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” from season one in 1998.
‘The Big C’ airs on Showtime on Monday at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT.
