Fox’s coverage of Game 1 of the Rangers-Giants World Series was Wednesday night’s most watched program with an average of 14.47 million total viewers. But as anticipated, that represented a 20 percent plunge in total viewers and in the demos from a year ago, when the Yankees squared off against the Phillies.

The “giant” winner for the night instead was ABC’s quartet of comedies, each of which saw upticks of about 10 percent. In fact, ‘Modern Family’ delivered an all-time high in viewers (13.07 million) and matched its best-ever demos (5.1).

* NBC’s yet-to-be-renewed ‘Undercovers’ dipped 8 percent, to 5.4 million viewers.

* With nearly 14 million viewers, ‘Criminal Minds’ bested baseball during the 9 o’clock hour.

* Opposite a ‘Law & Order: LA’ repeat, both CBS’ ‘The Defenders’ (9.9 mil) and ABC’s now canceled ‘Whole Truth’ (4.56 mil) stayed flat.
