TV Does Halloween: Who Had The Best Costume?

Halloween and primetime television have been pals for ages.

Every October we are treated to the highly anticipated “Halloween episode.” What’s better than seeing our favorite characters dressed in ridiculous costumes?

The blue collar classic ‘Roseanne’ set the Halloween episode standard. Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) and Dan (John Goodman) were greeted with hoots and hollers from a live studio audience every time they arrived on set donning elaborate costumes. Roseanne’s rendition of Prince might have been the best of all, but we no longer have the approval of a live crowd. The TV landscape may have changed since the days of ‘Roseanne,’ but the magic of the Halloween episode remains alive.

Lets take a look at some of this season’s best costumes:

Kevin (Brian Baumgartner) as documentary filmmaker Michael Moore in ‘The Office.’ A simple costume that only a portly man could pull off. It’s hard to imagine the aloof Kevin being passionate about anything, but his fake dirty beard tied the whole ensemble together.

Runner up:

Professor Chang (Ken Jeong) as figure skater Peggy Fleming in ‘Community’s outstanding Halloween episode. Everyone who guessed he was Kristi Yamaguchi was deemed ‘racist.’ Rightfully so.

Jeff Winger (Joe McHale) as David Beckhan. He rocked a $6,000 suit and carried a soccer ball. Simple and smart, but only a “too cool” character like Jeff Winger could pull it off.

Runner up:

Parenthood’s Max (Max Burkholder) as a cockroach. Max’s mother (Monica Potter) was so concerned his Aspergers would get in the way of his Halloween fun that she painfully made him practice trick or treating. Max knew it was a ludicrous exercise, so why not be the most despicable creature of all: a cockroach.

Most Confused:

Troy (Donald Glover) on ‘Community’ ditched his original ‘Alien’ themed costume because he deemed it too nerdy. He went to the bathroom and returned with a seat cover around his neck that read ‘Dracula’ and toilet paper rolls on his wrists. He thought he transformed into ‘sexy cool Dracula’ but ended up looking like a confused Chippendales dancer.

Runner up:

Michael Scott (Steve Carell) dressed up as Daryl (Craig Robinson) after he felt he had been back stabbed by his ambitious co-worker. In typical Michael Scott fashion the costume was misguided and offensive, but ultimately hilarious.

‘Twas the season of Lady Gaga. Several comedies placed male characters in Gaga garb with hilarious results. Even ‘Today‘s Meredith Vieira donned her best “Poker Face.” But the best Gaga goes to ‘Community’s Dean Pelton  (Jim Rash), who, despite a penchant for ABBA, cut a dashing figure in tights and knee-high space boots.

The ‘Roseanne’ Standard:

Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil Dunphy (Ty Burell) as the a corpse bride and groom on ‘Modern Family.’ Their costumes were elaborate and calculated and would have garnered plenty of applause if there was an audience to appreciate their preparedness.

Honorable Mention:

Glee‘s ‘Rocky Horror’ parody was a success, but they play dress up practically every episode. Plus, nobody can nobody can beat Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) dressed up as “Vogue” era Madonna anyway.

Who had your favorite costume this year?  Did we miss any?
