‘24‘ star Kiefer Sutherland has signed on for a spring 2011 Broadway revival of ‘That Championship Season,’ joining a cast that also includes Chris Noth (‘The Good Wife’), Jason Patric (Sutherland’s ‘Lost Boys’ costar), Brian Cox (‘L.I.E.’) and Jim Gaffigan (‘My Boys’).
Penned by Jason Miller, the play revolves around the starting lineup of a Catholic high school’s hoops team, reunited for the 20th anniversary of their winning a state championship.
Sutherland will play the role of James Daley, who went on to become a junior high school principal; Noth is Phil Romano, now a millionaire; Patric is James’ alcoholic brother, Tom; Gaffigan is George Sitkowski, now a shady mayor; and Cox is the fellas’ former coach.
Rehearsals start in January, with an eye on a February 10, 2011 opening, suggesting that Kiefer might not be making the pilot season rounds.
The larger question though concerns the oft-discussed ’24’ feature-film follow-up. Thus far Billy Ray (‘Flightplan’) has penned a draft script and Deadline says that Tony Scott (‘Man On Fire’) has had talks about possibly directing. But that’s about it. As Mary Lynn Rajskub recently told EW.com, “I think it would be great if it happened a year after the show went off the air, but I haven’t heard anything.”
