One might think that Brandy’s ‘Dancing with the Stars‘ partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy would have cooled off after his outburst on the show Monday night. But, nope. The opinionated dance pro had more to say on the hot topic.
First, here’s what went down on Week 8 during Maks and Brandy’s “Instant Dance,” the dance where they found out what song they were dancing to just minutes before the performance – a Cha Cha Cha to Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream.” It just so happens that the song has a bit of an instrumental piece before it truly kicks in. So Maks made the artistic choice for the couple to sit down on the steps during those beats, during the first few lyrics of the song, before actually hitting the dance floor.
Well, that pause didn’t exactly sit well with judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who complained, “The thing of the ‘Instant Dance’ is how quickly you get into the dance and how quickly you make it yours, and I’m kind of shocked that you took like four eights to begin your choreography when musicality should come so easy for you.”
“Relax,” said Maks, aka the Bad Boy of the Ballroom. “Don’t worry about it.”
That made Carrie Ann go even more mental over it, putting her hands to her face and saying, “I’m so stressed about it because Brandy’s amazing. It’s like Kurt did more dancing than you did!”
Maks still wouldn’t let it go, dismissing the comment with, “Let’s get a 7 then. Don’t worry about it.” Luckily the pair did not get a 7. Instead, they got two 9s (from Carrie Ann and Len Goodman) and a 10 (from Bruno Tonioli) for a total of 28.
In their post-performance interview with co-host Brooke Burke, Maks continued on with his issues saying, “I think I speak on behalf of all pro dancers out there because we bust our butts every week and, for some of us, the past 10 seasons … we feel like a lot of it is kind of being overlooked.”
Even after Brooke tried to change the subject, Maks went on: “If Carrie Ann wants to come and see us rehearse, she’s more than welcome to.”
We caught up with the fired-up Maks after the show to find out why he got so heated.
“It’s not my show,” he told reporters. “When it’s gonna be ‘Dancing with Maks,’ you know, it’s gonna be different. You can criticize me and talk about me all you want. But if you’re gonna criticize the choice of choreography, it has nothing to do with Brandy. To penalize her for starting late or whatever is just so stupid. Why even take the spotlight away from her? It’s my thing. You want to tell me this? Walk me out and say, ‘Hey, I don’t appreciate it.'”
Explaining why he did wait a few bars to start dancing, Maks said, “It was our interpretation. The song started four bars in, you know? It was very instrumental in the beginning and then it banged, and on that bang, we started dancing and we haven’t stopped. We didn’t slow down. We syncopated through everything. There was not even a little hold. It was not necessary. This comment was just stupid.”
All’s well that ends well, no? And a 28 is a good ending. “I’m happy with the scores,” said Brandy, “because I didn’t really know what was gonna happen after our Cha Cha.” “Carrie Ann looked like a 2 and a half,” Maks said.
Brandy backed her opinionated partner. “I just think Maks is coming from a very passionate, honest place and anybody that is honest and passionate will understand where he’s coming from. He really had my back out there,” she said. “I would do the same for him. I really would.”
Fellow pro Mark Ballas echoes Maks’ sentiments: “It’s frustrating, so I’m really glad Maks said what he said tonight, sticking up for the pros because we do bust our balls in the studio and she was blatantly better this week than last week.”
