D’oh boy – Fox has renewed ‘The Simpsons‘ for a 23rd season, meaning that come winter 2011/12, the animated series will uncork its 500th episode.
“Like many 22-year-olds, ‘The Simpsons’ is extremely happy remaining at home, on Fox, and hopes it doesn’t have to go out into the real world for many years to come,” executive producer Al Jean said in a statement.
Still, the renewal news comes on the heels of an installment in the annual “Treehouse Of Horror” series that many critics suggested was running out of creative steam. You can watch that full episode right here:
After all, there is a reason that Comedy Central’s ‘South Park’ served up an episode titled “Simpsons Already Did It,” in which the Colorado kiddies labor to concoct a scheme not already depicted on the Fox series. And that ‘South Park’ concession was made more than eight years ago. Imagine what Homer, Bart et al have additionally covered in the 160+ episode since!
But let’s look to the future, where upcoming ‘Simpsons’ guest voices include Halle Berry, Paul Rudd, Ricky Gervais, Rachel Weisz, ‘Mad’ man Jon Hamm, ‘SNL’s Kristen Wiig, ‘How I Met Your Mother’s Alyson Hannigan, ‘Criminal Minds’ Joe Mantegna, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Martha Stewart, and pop tart Katy Perry, who will appear in a live-action sequence alongside ‘Simpsons’ puppets.
Do you think this is the Best. News. Ever? Or is ‘The Simpsons’ at risk of running out of non-repetitive material?
