Lisa Ling has already filmed most of her upcoming series ‘Our America’, which will air on the new Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) beginning in January.
“This is the work I am proudest of,” she told xfinityTV.com while offering a sneak peak at the hour-long news magazine.
“There is a lot of crap on television. I feel really good that there is going to be a lot of take-away from the programming on OWN. Oprah is someone who maintains such integrity. I think that is one of the reasons she has been able to maintain such a level of success.”
What will the focus of your show be? It is really a show about taking ownership of who we are as Americans. It is a look at us in our most inspiring and most beautiful, but also our most challenging and darkest periods.
What kind of stories will you be covering? We will be featuring everyone from people in the faith movement to gay Christians to people who are trying to preach the gay out of Christians. And sex offenders. We have over 700,000 of them in the United States, you know. And they are Americans just like you and me.
There are communities in Ohio being ravaged by heroine and they are just as American. They just happened upon challenging times. We will tell their stories.
Why is this material so fascinating for you? To be able to be immersed in these communities all over the country that are so different from where I live now is exciting for me. Especially because these communities exist in our own backyard.
What is one thing you know about Oprah that would surprise us? She likes to walk around the office in her slippers. You probably wouldn’t expect to see her there as often, but she is in the office at all hours of the night and works really hard.
What type of shows do you like to watch? I never miss The Daily Show. I love ‘Glee‘. And ‘Man V. Food‘. It is so fun to watch this person try to consume incredible amounts of calories. So I can live vicariously through him.
What will Thanksgiving be like for you and your family this year? Thanksgiving since my sister was returned (from captivity in North Korea) is very special. We relish every second that we are together. There are a lot of Chinese people in our family, so there will be a lot of people there. This year, we may just go to a Chinese restaurant because they are always open on Thanksgiving. We are going to have such a big group that we will have to forgo the turkey for Peking duck.
Lisa Ling’s ‘Our America’ premieres Sunday, January 30 at 8:00 p.m. on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
