Let’s set the record straight right now: Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg are not feuding. Moreover, they are not now, nor have they ever been mad at each other for any reason. Got that?
That was the word from both of them when they appeared together on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ on Monday. Whoopi flew out to Chicago from New York (where she co-hosts ‘The View’) to appear on Oprah’s show as part of a one-time-only, 25th-anniversary reunion of the cast of ‘The Color Purple,’ the beloved 1985 movie directed by Steven Spielberg – and for which Oprah earned an Oscar nomination.
So, despite the fact that a feud does not – and never did – exist between Oprah and Whoopi, the two still felt obligated to clear the air on the feud issue because, apparently, rumors have circulated for years that they were not on speaking terms.
Oprah raised the subject as soon as Whoopi joined her on stage. “Whoopi and I hadn’t seen or spoken to each other in years,” Oprah said, “and then this summer we ran into each other at a gathering at Tyler Perry’s house when [Whoopi] was filming the movie ‘For Colored Girls.’ And it was really a divine moment because we met in the kitchen over some collard greens. Whoopi came up to me and she said, ‘Can I just ask you something? Did I do something to you?’ And I said, ‘What are you talking about! All these years, I thought you were mad at me’!”
Whoopi told Oprah she was not mad at her, but was under the impression that Oprah was ticked off at her because, Whoopi said, “people kept saying you were!”
After each shed a few tears, the two talk-show stars chalked the whole thing up to a misunderstanding. “Who knows?” Whoopi said. “I don’t know if it happens to you, but oftentimes people say to me, if there’s somebody black in Hollywood, they say, ‘Do you know so-and-so? Do you hang out?’ I say no!”
“All black people don’t know each other!” Oprah declared.
On the subject of this alleged feud: This case is now closed. OK?
