On Monday night, Jon Stewart criticized the Republican Party’s hold-up of legislation that would fund health care benefits to 9/11 first responders. On Thursday’s “Daily Show” (the last of the year), Stewart once again blasted Republicans, as well as the news media for largely ignoring this issue.
“None of the three broadcast networks have mentioned any of this in their evening newscasts for two and a half months,” Stewart said, wryly adding, “although, to be fair – it’s not every day that Beatles songs come to iTunes.
“This is an outrageous abdication of our responsibility to those who were most heroic on 9/11,” he continued.
Upping the ante, Stewart welcomed a group of 9/11 first responders to share their stories and struggles. The result was a sobering and moving interview that concluded with the host issuing a heartfelt apology to his guests for this “absolute travesty.”
