Harry Connick Jr. harbors no ill will toward “American Idol.” After appearing as a mentor on the series last year, he was rumored to be in the running to join this season’s judging panel. Instead, the gigs went to Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

“They asked me if I was interested in doing it, and I was interested,” Connick said Saturday night following a live performance at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena. “We had some preliminary conversations and it just kind of fizzled out.”

The busy musician-actor appeared at press tour to promote his upcoming PBS special, “Great Performances: Harry Connick Jr. in Concert on Broadway.” This fall he’ll also star opposite Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd in the film “Dolphin Tale.”

“Had it materialized, it would have been a fun thing to do,” he confessed. “Fortunately I’ve got some other things going, and that was fine.”

What do you think of “Idol’s” decision not to bring back HCJ? Were Lopez and Tyler better picks?
