College football just kicked off cable TV history.
The BCS National Championship game between the Auburn Tigers and the Oregon Ducks shattered ratings records and is now the most-watched cable broadcast ever.
ESPN’s coverage of the college football championship, won by Auburn 22-19, pulled in 27.3 million viewers and a 17.8 fast national rating, according to Nielsen numbers released by ESPN.
The Bowl Championship Series outscored a “Monday Night Football” showdown between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 5, 2009, which was the previous record holder with 21.8 million viewers.
The network also noted that the 15.3 rating was higher than four of the 12 BCS title games, while the 27 million viewers was higher than eight of the 12 BCS title games.
The game came to a thrilling conclusion Monday night—with a title-winning field goal by Auburn to beat the mighty Ducks in the final seconds of the game.
