Kathy Bates laid down the law Monday night on NBC, winning the 10 p.m. hour (9c) with the debut of her new legal drama, “Harry’s Law.”

Her new series, produced by David E. Kelley (“The Practice,” “Boston Legal,” “Ally McBeal”), even swooped in to beat “Hawaii Five-O” on CBS. For the hour, “Harry’s Law” drew 11.039 million viewers, with “Five-O” attracting 10.615 million, according to Nielsen overnights.

The performance of “Harry’s Law” was made even more incredible when you consider its lead-ins vs. those of “Hawaii Five-O.” On CBS, the paradise-based cop drama follows TV’s highest-rated comedy lineup – “How I Met Your Mother” (10.512 million on Monday night), “Rules of Engagement” (9.849 million), “Two and a Half Men” (15.551 million) and “Mike & Molly” (13.034 million).

On NBC, “Harry’s Law” follows “Chuck” at 8 p.m. (5.923 million on Monday) and the new “The Cape” at 9 (6.188 million) – which means the audience for “Harry’s Law” increased 44 percent off its lead-in. By comparison, “Hawaii Five-O” lost viewers coming out of “Mike & Molly.”

“Hawaii Five-O” did beat “Harry’s Law” in both important demos – 25-54 and 18-49, CBS noted in its own ratings release Tuesday. In addition, CBS won the night, with its comedies all posting their best ratings of the season, the network said.

On “Harry’s Law,” Bates plays an attorney – Harriett Korn – who opens a storefront law office in a struggling neighborhood in Cincinnati. The series also stars Brittany Snow as “Harry’s” assistant and Nathan Corddry as her young law partner.
