Last week, Chris Medina watched his departure from “American Idol” with friends and family, and all of them shed J. Lo-like tears except him. He managed to keep it together, he told Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa on “Live!” Monday morning. Now the big question is, will he keep it together as a pop star? Will he even be a pop star?

His effort began last Friday with an appearance on “The Tonight Show,” where he debuted his single, “What Are Words,” a ballad inspired by his wheelchair-bound fiancee Juliana Ramos. After mining Medina’s emotional backstory, “Idol” producers took advantage of his early dismissal, rushing out a song produced and recorded by Rodney Jerkins for 19 Entertainment. As of Monday afternoon, it was No. 27 on the iTunes Top 100 Chart following Friday’s digital release.

Life After ‘Idol’: Chris Medina Finds A Home On Interscope

“It’s absolutely shameless, but you’d have to be made of stone not to be moved,” our “Idol” expert and Hits magazine senior editor Roy Trakin says of his debut. “Medina may not have an ‘American Idol’-quality voice, but he’s got something more, and that’s heart. I like this use of the immediacy of the show to help someone out. It’s capitalism at its most effective.”

Now, Medina is focused on making more music. He hasn’t ruled out auditioning for “Idol” again. More importantly, he said his love of nine years is “doing great” thanks in part to the “magic kiss” she got from Steven Tyler. “It was fantastic,” he told the “Live!” co-hosts of Tyler’s memorable embrace. “It was like, people who are superstars kind of become real in that moment.”
