Will the upcoming “Grey’s Anatomy” musical episode be as inspired as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s” famous Once More With Feeling, or will it fall as flat as the “Glee” post-Superbowl stunt?  Given the amount of effort that the producers and stars are putting into it, all signs point to it becoming one of the series’ most memorable episodes. ABC has released footage (below) of the “Grey’s Anatomy” cast recording songs for the March 31 installment of the show, entitled The Song Beneath the Song. Though the network is keeping their actual songs under wraps, the producers assure viewers that everyone sounds great. That is not surprising given that two of the show’s stars, Sara Ramirez (Callie) and Chandra Wilson (Miranda), have worked extensively in musical theater.

Much about the episode is still shrouded in secrecy. This is what has been revealed so far: the episode is from Callie’s point-of-view, while the pregnant orthopedic surgeon is experiencing a medical crisis. It will feature iconic songs from the show’s soundtrack, like Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars and The Fray’s How to Save A Life rather than original material. In the video, executive producer Tony Phelan assures viewers that the episode will not be just, “Doctors dancing down hallways.” Series creator Shonda Rhimes revealed to TV Guide that Ellen Pompeo (Meredith) was originally skeptical of the concept.  “Ellen Pompeo [Meredith] was very much like, ‘Tell me we’re not going to sing and dance in the hall. This is crazy!” but changed her mind after the first read-through, saying, “‘I never say I’m wrong, but I was wrong and I want to sing more!'”

TV Guide also reveals some song spoilers. The trio of Ramirez, Bailey and Kevin McKidd (Owen) will sing Chasing Cars. Lexie (Chyler Leigh) will be singing Anna Nalick’s Breathe (2AM). The entire female cast will perform Kate Havenik’s Grace.

Rhimes proclaims that if this episode is a hit, than Grey’s sister show “Private Practice” will also get the musical treatment, to showcase the voice of Taye Diggs, who was part of “Rent’s” original cast.
