Simon Cowell admitted on “The Tonight Show” that he has caught bits and pieces of “American Idol” since he left, and the show seems to be doing fine.

“I think it’s about the same. I’m like that with my friends: do well, just don’t do that well,” Cowell said.

He had kind words for former fellow judge Paula Abdul. “She as a judge, I still say this, is one of the best judges I’ve ever worked with because she’s actually incredibly passionate about music and actually she’s got good taste, believe it or not. I love her, I miss her,” he said. (There’s a compliment in there somewhere.)

Cowell also took a small jab at new judge Steven Tyler, by way of quoting his 86-year-old mother.

“I think she forgot I wasn’t on the show this year,” he said, saying she called after watching.

Cowell said his mom said: “Tell Jennifer, the new girl, that I like her. Give my love to Randy and – true story – tell Paula she looks a bit tired.”

He also discussed go kart racing, his new fall show “The X Factor” and his 1990s appearance on a British game show.
