Glee” star Matthew Morrison has conquered Broadway, the small screen, and now he’s going for the music world with his debut pop single, “Summer Rain,” out today on iTunes.

“It’s scary to me,” Morrison admits to us. “I love doing things that challenge me and this has definitely been challenging, but it makes me feel alive too.”

The most frightening part for Morrison, who plays Will Schuester on the Fox hit show, is putting himself out there and doing something he’s never done before. “It’s scary, especially in a world where it’s so easy to hate on people on the Internet. But you only live once and I’m scared because I can’t hide behind a cast or a crew or a show or anything. It’s my name on this thing.”

His debut full-length record (not-yet-titled) is out May 10 via Mercury Records and includes a duet with none other than one of the music’s greats, Elton John. Below, Morrison dishes more details…

What’s more of a dream come true for you – releasing your debut record or being on a successful TV show?
I have a Broadway career, a TV career, now a music career. I can’t compare them. I love them all so much. I haven’t even really gotten to experience the music yet because it’s all new to me, but that’s what I’m excited about the most right now.

Do you fear not being taken seriously as a musician because you are an actor?
Uh, yeah. I do come from a music background. “Glee,” it’s not a big leap. That’s why I felt it’s important, to be taken seriously, that I had to write a lot of the songs on this album. And that’s what I did. That was a scary part of the process. I never really did that before and I have so much respect for the songwriting process now.

What’s the rest of the record like?
It’s more mid-tempo driven songs. There’s a lot of really deep, soul-searching stuff on there. I have some great duets on there too. I have three of them and I can’t name two of them, but one is Elton John.

Tell us about the Elton John collaboration.
We did a 7-minute song, I wanted to honor him, it’s a mash-up of ‘Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters’ and it goes into ‘Rocket Man.’ It’s epic. Hearing his voice, so iconic, and his voice fades out and mine comes in and I was like, whoa, what world am I living in right now. It’s crazy.

Will you perform songs from the CD on record?
That is a Ryan Murphy question. Of course, that would incredible. I don’t even want to ask. I’m so honored to have this job in the first place and I never like to rock the boat. He really loves the album, though, and we’re actually talking about maybe directing the video for ‘Summer Rain.’

You’re close to Jane Lynch, what does she think?
Yeah, Jane’s my best friend on the show. I played her the more singer-songwriter stuff, because she likes that stuff. She liked it.

Morrison will perform “Summer Rain” on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on April 6 and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on April 11.
