Betty White not only gets more action with the gentleman on “Hot in Cleveland” than her younger costars, but now she gets to get into a good ol’ classic catfight with Doris Roberts too.
“We did the show last Friday night and she’s a joy,” Roberts said at the Paley Festival Tuesday night. “We had a great good time. It’s a little bit of a surprise. I hit her. I hope we start rumors about how Doris and Betty are feuding.”
The rumored storyline for Roberts (“Everybody Loves Raymond“) is that she plays a woman who had an affair with White’s character Elka Ostrovsky’s ex and has a secret about him. The episode is scheduled to air sometime in June or July, we’re told.
“It’s pretty funny. It’s the opening shot. She [White] took her out. She just knocked her lights out. It was really funny,” said Wendie Malick (Victoria Chase).
Now in its second season, White says the series has been able to get so many great guest stars (Mary Tyler Moore, Susan Lucci, and Carl Reiner, to name a few) because “the show has a wonderful air about it. We all love each other. We’re the happiest set in the world and the writers do justice to the guest stars, so we have fun entertaining them and they have fun coming on and doing their bit.”
“We’re like Old ‘Glee.’ Mature ‘Glee,’ like fine wine ‘Glee,'” joked Malick, referring to the Fox show’s constant array of great guest stars as well.
Coming up next week: A “Frasier” reunion of sorts when John Mahoney rejoins his former costar Jane Leeves (Joy Scroggs).
“It’s thrilling,” said Leeves. “He’s playing a waiter where we have our birthdays. He’s a terrible waiter and he’s telling everyone, ‘you shouldn’t be with him and you should…’ And I think there’s a big thing with him and Betty. I’m hoping. He’s too cute.”
As for the season 2 finale on March 23 on TVLand, executive producer Suzanne Martin promises “a big cliffhanger.”
