Will ‘Days’ Bring Gay Romance Back to Daytime?

Days of Our Lives” has long been the most conservative soap opera. Its core family, the Bradys, are devout Catholics, and characters regularly seek the counsel of priests, even though that does not stop them from ignoring all ten of the commandments. It is also the least realistic soap on the air. Recent plots have included a woman getting her heart stolen by a prison-based organ theft ring, a brainwashed lookalike masquerading as a cop, and a woman being buried alive in a sarcophagus. It’s the last show that one would expect to do a gay storyline, yet according to Entertainment Weekly, it may be happening soon. The magazine claims, “it may involve a current cast member hooking up with someone new.”

Likely candidates include teens Will (Chandler Massey) and Chad (Casey Diedrick), who fans have noted have more chemistry with each other than they do with their female love interests. Another far less plausible scenario — though in keeping with the loopy tone of “Days” — could have Rafe (Galen Gering), who has been sent to an undisclosed location after suffering drug induced amnesia embarking on a relationship with a man because his new persona is gay. Crystal Chappell, who plays Carly, was part of a popular lesbian storyline on her prior soap, “Guiding Light,” and currently stars in and produces the lesbian-themed web series “Venice.” Given that Carly is currently single, the show might consider pairing her with a woman.

Over the past few years several soaps have done gay storylines, including “All My Children,” “One Life To Live” and the canceled “As The World Turns.” However, the gay population of daytime has dwindled. The only current major gay character is “All My Children’s” Bianca (Christine Lind), and she has not have a love interest at the moment. Will “Days” fill the void? Stay tuned.
