Third Reich: Rise and Fall

For the second half of the twentieth century, the Third Reich has been deliberated and dissected. Now, as the “Greatest Generation” fades into history, the image of 40,000 uniformed Nazis goose-stepping in perfect synchronization represents all most Americans know about history’s most dangerously successful totalitarian government. ‘The Third Reich: Rise and Fall’ digs deep beneath the surface of our collective understanding of the Third Reich and unearths what we don’t know about the individuals who comprised one of the most fascinating and complex regimes of recent history. ‘The Third Reich’ uncovers familiar anecdotes and fascinating details about the people who comprised the Nazi Party, and raids the treasure trove of archives the Nazis left behind, including rarely-seen German newsreel recordings along with other unique footage carried home by Russian troops. Based on “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”, the best-selling classic of the Nazi era and World War II by acclaimed historian William Shirer, this program is a compelling and definitive look at one of the most fascinating and singularly evil regimes in history. Big D gets even bigger with three movies and a cast reunion! From 1978 to 1991, the TV series ‘Dallas‘ grew legions of fans with compulsively watchable tales of greed, sex and schemes – most masterminded by smilin’ J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman), the double-dealing oilman folks love to hate. Dallas was so popular, it also spawned the four exciting pieces in this special collection, starting with a prequel (The Early Years) that sets the stage for the drama to come. The other three, starring Hagman and more beloved cast members, include reunion movies (J. R. Returns, The War of the Ewings) that plunge a wheeling-dealing J.R. into plots to take over Ewing Oil and a fascinating retrospective (Return to Southfork) brimming with clips, outtakes, and reminiscences from your favorite Dallas stars. Doctor Who

The Doctor arrives on the paradise planet of Deva Loka to find a colonial mission on the verge of collapse in ‘Doctor Who: Kinda.’ Several of its members have vanished into the jungle without a trace, leaving the survivors suspicious and paranoid. The mystery deepens as it becomes clear that the planet’s native inhabitants, the Kinda, possess hitherto unsuspected powers that challenge human understanding. The TARDIS makes an unplanned landing on Manussa, where preparations are underway to celebrate the defeat of the Sumaran Empire 500 years earlier in ‘Doctor Who: Snakedance.’ But the ancient evil of the Mara lives on, and Tegan (Janet Fielding), who continues to be haunted by disturbing dreams since her time under the Windchimes on Deva Loka, is now a pawn in its plan to re-enter the physical world and subjugate the Manussan people. Car 54, Where are You?

Many critics and comedians believe that ‘Car 54 Where Are You?‘ is one of the best comedy series ever to appear on television. Long out of circulation, this brilliant show can now be discovered by new generations who will have a chance to view it for the first time. In celebration of the series’ 50th anniversary, Shanachie Entertainment has released all 30 episodes of the first season as a 4-disc DVD package. This is the first time the shows have ever been on DVD, now newly remastered from the only known set of 35 mm fine grain prints. The show is set in the Bronx’s 53rd precinct, where the cops depicted are all great comedic characters, as are the residents of the neighborhood they patrol. The central figures of the show are the Mutt & Jeff squad car team of Toody and Muldoon, played by Joe E. Ross and Fred Gwynne. In real life the actors were also an odd couple for the ages – the crudest burlesque comedian from the lower rungs of show business paired with a trained Harvard-educated actor. Muldoon plays the long-suffering voice of reason who invariably reins in his short stocky partner’s dimwitted schemes and patiently listens to his hilariously inane prattle. Jamie Morgan (Jim Sturgess) is a talented young photographer whose disfiguring heart-shaped birthmark makes him an outsider in his rough East London neighborhood in ‘Heartless.’ Developing pictures he has taken in an abandoned lot, Jamie discovers a hooded figure peering from behind a window. Investigating this mysterious image, he stumbles into a horrific world of reptilian monsters posing as street gangs, violence inflicted on the most innocent, and a demon (Joseph Mawle) with the power to offer Jamie everything he’s ever dreamed of – at a deadly price. Airing on NBC, ‘Dragnet 1970‘ was the second run of the highly popular Dragnet TV series. Behind the Burly Q

In the days before hardcore pornography attained mainstream accessibility in America, a more docile and suggestive form of adult entertainment proliferated in and around big cities, especially Manhattan: the classic burlesque show. Populated by musicians, comedians, and strippers, and cloaked in an overarching gaudiness, “burly” shows typically cost a dime for a single admission. Check this world out in ‘Behind the Burly Q.’ Especially during difficult eras such as the Great Depression, the shows enabled male attendees to temporarily cast their troubles aside. As helmed by Leslie Zemeckis (documentarist wife of Robert Zemeckis), this chronicle examines the burly tradition by interviewing authors, historians, and burlesque participants including former strippers, comedians, and novelty acts.
