Trump and Seinfeld in Bitter Feud Over Trump’s Obama Criticism

Now Donald Trump is feuding with Jerry Seinfeld (of all people!). The headstrong star of “The Celebrity Apprentice” on NBC is blasting Seinfeld for backing out of a scheduled appearance for a charity in which Trump is involved.

The reason Seinfeld canceled: The comedian doesn’t approve of Trump’s outspoken criticism lately of President Obama and his questioning of the president’s birth-origins.

Seinfeld wading into politics? Now that’s something from the man most famous for producing and starring in a show about nothing (which turned out to be the most revered series in the history of television).

Well, Trump doesn’t revere Seinfeld following the comedian’s decision to withdraw from appearing next September at a fund-raising event for a charitable foundation established by Trump’s son, Eric, that will benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the one established by Danny Thomas in Memphis.

“I just learned you canceled a show for my son’s charity because of the fact that I am being very aggressive with respect to President Obama, who is doing an absolutely terrible job as our leader,” wrote Trump in a letter to Seinfeld that the real-estate billionaire and potential presidential candidate apparently couldn’t resist releasing to the New York Post, which wrote about it here.

Trump not only blasted Seinfeld personally, but he also took aim at Seinfeld’s current show on NBC, “The Marriage Ref” (airing on the same network Trump works for). “What I do feel badly about is that I agreed to do, and did, your failed show, ‘The Marriage Ref,’ even though I thought it was absolutely terrible,” Trump wrote. “Despite its poor ratings, I didn’t cancel on you like you canceled on my son and St. Jude. I only wish I did.

“We don’t care that you broke your commitment,” thundered Trump, but “the children of St. Jude are very disappointed. … Your manager clearly stated you are ‘truly a man of his word’ ” – and yada yada yada – “you should be ashamed of yourself!” Trump said.

For the record, “The Marriage Ref” is not, technically, a “failed” show since it hasn’t been canceled. It has been relegated to summer, however, presumably because it wasn’t cutting the mustard, ratings-wise, during the regular TV season. In fact, it’ll be exactly a year tomorrow (Friday) since Trump appeared on the show, along with fellow guest stars Adam Carolla and Gloria Estefan.

Seinfeld hasn’t commented personally in response to Trump, but a rep for the comedian is quoted in the Post story explaining why Jerry backed out. “Jerry has grown increasingly uncomfortable” with Trump’s criticism of Obama, the rep said. “Jerry feels this kind of demagoguery has no place in public discourse. … He has respectfully withdrawn from the event, and is making a contribution both to the Eric Trump Foundation and to [St. Jude].”

So now you can add Jerry Seinfeld to the growing list of celebrities with whom Trump has feuded with over the years – most famously Rosie O’Donnell a few years back when Rosie was on “The View.”
