A pair of pig farming sisters! A 20 year-old Mormon coming out of the closet! And Christina changing her mind after seeing her pick?
Week two of blind auditions on “The Voice” was full of shock and surprises as celebrity coaches Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton scrambled to fill out their teams before heading in to the “battle rounds.”
Here are a few of our favorites:
THE JERSEY GIRL
16 year-old Raquel Castro is actually from Long Island – but she still has Garden State cred after playing Ben Affleck’s daughter in the 2004 movie “Jersey Girl.” Now a singer (with allegedly just a few months of training) Raquel earned a spot on Team Christina with her performance of “Bleeding Love.”
THE GAY MORMON
20 year-old Tyler Robinson doesn’t want to be defined by his homosexuality – but it’s the first thing he shares during his big moment on television. “My father does not know that I’m gay,” he reveals before belting out the Train hit “Hey, Soul Sister.” “I actually haven’t told him yet. I guess he knows now.” D’uh! Blake says he looks like Drew Carey – but ends up picking him anyway.
THE THOMPSON TWINS (No, not really)
More recycled reality stars. This time it is Tori & Taylor Thompson. Hats off to Daniel Feinberg at Hitfix for noticing that the two sisters (ages 17 & 19) from Santa Clarita, CA were finalists way back when on a horrible “Idol” ripoff called “American Juniors.” Today they apparently live on a farm, raise pigs for the county fair and perform county songs together. It will be interesting to see what happens after they spend a few weeks with Cee Lo.
ADAM’S IDENTITY CRISIS
Adam Levine needed a girl for his team and thought he found just the right one – until his chair turned around and he saw Tim Mahoney. “Don’t be insulted by this,” Adam says after Mahoney’s rendition of “Bring It On Home To Me.” “I thought you were a chick…but sadly you have a penis.”
THE SECOND CHANCE GIRL
We don’t get to see much of her original performance – only Christina telling Bay area native Lily Elise that she had changed her mind and was withdrawing her pick. Of course that would be exactly the kind of mean trickery that producer Mark Burnett said would never happen. So it was no surprise that when a few open spots remained at the end, Lily was invited to come back and re-audition. This time Christina is stuck with her.
Next week we get to “The Battle Rounds,” where contestants will sing in a make-shift boxing ring. No, really. We’re not making this up.
