The Big Bang Theory” added women to the equation this season. The guys found themselves immersed in a subject far more difficult than physics: romantic relationships. Sheldon could undoubtedly calculate the precise number of laughs that the new characters Amy and Bernadette created. For viewers without PhDs, it’s enough to say that it was a very funny year. It was also the year that BBT proved it was appointment television, succeeding in a tough new Thursday night time period. The show that celebrates intellectuals and geeks will wrap up its fourth season on May 19th. Executive Producer Bill Prady previewed the season finale, talked about the new ground that the series broke this year and revealed which A-list guest star will be back next season.

Take us inside your approach to the finale, and what you wanted to accomplish.
While we’re not a heavily serialized show, we have been following some interesting relationships between characters. We wanted to bring a few of those relationships to an interesting crisis point and leave them there for the summer.

Did anything disappoint you about this season?
Not really. I think we did some of our best episodes so far this season. Also, it’s a terrifically fun place to come to work.

Anything you wish you could have done, but didn’t have the time, forethought or resources?
We love working with Christine Baranski. She was nominated for an Emmy last year in her role as Leonard’s (Johnny Galecki) mother. We never found the right story for her this year, but I’m sure we’ll see her next season.

What should fans look forward to next season? And if you haven’t gotten that far yet…what would your dream season be?
You’re absolutely correct in assuming that we haven’t gotten that far. As for my dreams of next season, I really hope to continue what we’ve been doing this year. Expanding our ensemble to include Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik has afforded us the opportunity to tell new stories with our main cast. Before this year, Penny never had a girls’ night and Sheldon never went on a date. We think there are still many stories that we have yet to tell.

What were the high points of the season?
We are all so proud of Jim Parsons and his winning the Emmy and Golden Globe awards for Best Actor in a Comedy. We see how hard he works every day and know more than anyone just how much he deserves it. (Note to Emmy people: our other cast members work just as hard and deserve some statues too!)

Personally for me, one of the perks of the job is meeting our guest stars like Steve Wozniak and Brian Greene. Our science advisor, Professor David Saltzberg, also keeps bringing by Nobel Prize winning physicists to the show. I just never imagined that a career in writing sitcoms would result in me hanging out with so many Nobel Laureates.

Do you have a favorite episode, line, or scene from this season?
Actually my favorite line of the season is from the finale so you’ll have to watch it and guess what it is. Look me up on Twitter (@billprady) to see if you’re right.
