NEW YORK (Reuters) – NBC Universal said on Thursday veteran sports programing executive Dick Ebersol has resigned from the company after a 40-year career at NBC spanning the Olympics and “Sunday Night Football” to “Saturday Night Live.”

Ebersol, who was chairman of NBC Sports for 22 years, resigned some five months after Comcast Corp took control of NBC Universal.

NBC Universal Chief Executive Steve Burke described Ebersol as “an incredible talent” whose contributions to the company are unsurpassed.

The company has appointed Mark Lazarus, currently president of NBC Sports Cable Group, as the new chairman of the NBC Sports Group.
