How’s this for timing? Katie Couric will reportedly announce plans for a syndicated talk show on Monday, the very day that Scott Pelley assumes her old job as anchor of “The CBS Evening News.”

The move, reported late Friday in The Hollywood Reporter, could be designed to draw attention away from Pelley’s debut since the Couric story would then become the day’s dominant story in TV.

Or maybe it’s just a coincidence. It could be that Couric is eager to put her CBS News stint behind her and just so happens to be ready to announce this new venture and get on with her life and career. According to THR, the announcement will come from Disney/ABC – which had emerged as the frontrunner for Couric in the weeks since she signed off at CBS.

Disney is expected to announce details that have been rumored but unconfirmed for a while – that Couric will headline a syndicated daytime talk show, with her former producer from NBC’s “Today” show, Jeff Zucker, as executive producer. (Most recently, Zucker was CEO of NBC Universal.) Couric will also turn up occasionally on ABC News programs, THR said, in a capacity that is not yet defined (and one that presumably will not threaten or otherwise draw the limelight away from any of ABC’s established news stars such as anchorwoman Diane Sawyer).

One important thing to note about the THR story: It says “Disney/ABC is expected [italics added] to announce as soon as Monday that Katie Couric will host a new talk show.” So it’s not 100 percent certain the announcement will come on Monday, but the odds feels pretty good.

This new Couric talk show won’t debut until 2012, the trade mag said.
