The kids might be on summer break, but TV is not on vacation, despite its summer reputation. Here are five new summer shows worth checking out, and five returning shows we’re hot for.

Ready, set, DVR!

1. “Falling Skies

Premise: From executive producer Steven Spielberg and starring “ER’s” Noah Wyle and “Journeyman’s” Moon Bloodgood, “Falling Skies” tells the tale of a global alien invasion and the group of survivors who form a resistance in the aftermath to fight the space invaders.

PREMIERE DATE: Two-hour premiere Sunday, June 19 at 10 p.m. on TNT

2. “Teen Wolf

Premise: Because wolves and remakes (and teen angst) are all the rage, the Michael J. Fox hit film was an obvious makeover choice, this time bred for the MTV set.

PREMIERE DATE: Sunday, June 5 at 11 p.m. on MTV

4. “Wilfred

Premise: A shy, depressed young man, played by “Lord of the Ring’s” Elijah Wood, sees his neighbor’s dog Wilfred as a grown man (with biting sarcasm) in a dog suit, who just might be able to help bring Ryan out of his shell. Unless, of course, he’s just nuts.

PREMIERE DATE: Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. on Oxygen
