Bruce and Kris Jenner — patriarch and matriarch of the Kardashian clan — defended their reality show and reality TV in general on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” Friday night.

Leno asked them to respond to recent criticism — such as the dismissive remark Reese Witherspoon made about reality TV earlier this month at the “MTV Movie Awards.” “I get it, girls, that it’s cool to be a bad girl,” Witherspoon said. “But it is possible to make it in Hollywood without doing a reality show.”

Kris Jenner noted that reality TV is still consider a “new” kind of TV show to many people in Hollywood. She emphasized that the genre has provided a whole new way for thousands of people in the TV-and-movie community to make a living.

“There are a lot of people that work on ["Keeping Up with the Kardashians"] — we employ a lot of people and I think reality shows, as a whole [has created] a whole new industry for people to have wonderful jobs,” she said.

Leno asked them about the criticism leveled at them when it was revealed recently that 15-year-old Kendall Kardashian is using birth control pills. The revelation apparently comes later this season (the new season starts Sunday, June 12, at 10/9c on E!).

“We deal with family issues,” Bruce Jenner said, “and the bottom line is it’s about a family. And we deal with family issues and sometimes very tough issues, but every family has to deal with that. We try to keep it as honest as we possibly can.”

The conversation about reality TV and its foibles took place in the Jenners’ second segment. The first segment of their appearance on “Tonight” was more light-hearted, as they presented a 30-year-old video clip as a surprise for fellow guest Bill Cosby. Then Jay surprised Bruce with another “revealing” clip — from one of Bruce’s — ahem — unforgettable movies. You simply won’t believe the outfit Jenner wore in this scene!
